Once you've contacted us, filled out a volunteer application, and set up a time for your orientation, here's a rundown of what to expect on orientation day.
Before the orientation, you'll need to make sure to wear close toed shoes and clothing you don't mind getting dirty. You'll also need to print & sign the following waiver if you're doing any positions that involve working with the animals, aside from taking a dog out on a day trip. Try to learn some names of the dogs and cats we have by clicking here. Please plan to arrive a little bit early. If you plan to stay for a while, please bring water or anything else you might need. You can store any bags or equipment in our office. Orientations take anywhere from 15-30 minutes, but we recommend you stay for a total of at least an hour on your first day. You can stay for as long as you'd like to help out!
When you arrive, you'll see a sign that says "Hurstland Kennels (HK)" - they're closed down and we're not affiliated with them, but you're in the right place if you spot it. You can park in the PCI Business parking lot in front of where we're located. Walk through the big gate by the HK sign, which will sometimes be open, and we should have someone waiting for you! If not, it may be because we just had to do something really quickly, so please walk down up to our office building and wait for us at the patio chairs under the easy-up canopy.
During your orientation, we'll go over the basics of what you can do at the shelter depending on what you applied for and what opportunities we have available. We'll likely show you how to get the dogs out of the kennels, where everything is, and have you perform some tasks so that you can get a feel for how we do things at the shelter. We're pretty informal and don't have set positions, so if you'd like to help out with something else, go for it! We might ask volunteers to help us with various tasks like washing a couple of dogs if needed.
Volunteer Hours - If you're looking to volunteer for volunteer hours, please let us know on your orientation day and be sure to prepare all of the papers you need to record your hours.
