Foster FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Fostering from VIDA Rescue
Fostering is one of the most meaningful ways to support rescued animals. By providing a temporary, loving home, you help animals feel safe, recover, and prepare for their forever families.
Whether you're a first-time foster parent or an experienced pet owner, we're here to support you every step of the way. Explore our frequently asked questions below to learn about foster eligibility, responsibilities, time commitments, and how to get started.
Who can become a foster parent?
Anyone over 18 years old can apply to foster with VIDA Rescue! If you are younger than 18, please have a parent or legal guardian submit the application.
Our team works with you to find an animal that fits your lifestyle, home, and experience level.
Do I need previous pet ownership experience?
Not at all! You do not need previous pet ownership experience to become a foster parent.
Fostering can be a wonderful opportunity to learn about caring for an animal before making a long-term commitment.
Our team will provide guidance and help match you with a suitable pet, such as a calm, friendly, or senior dog or cat.
Does fostering cost anything?
No! Fostering with VIDA Rescue is free.
We provide necessary supplies and veterinary care for animals in our foster program.
Your most important contribution is providing a safe, loving, and comfortable temporary home.
Can I foster if I work full-time?
Absolutely! Many of our foster parents work full-time, including those with 9-to-5 schedules or longer shifts.
We work with you to find an animal whose needs are compatible with your daily routine.
Senior dogs, calm animals, and certain cats may be suitable options for people with busy schedules.
What time commitments are required?
Fostering involves daily care and occasional appointments. Two important commitments include:
- Adoption Appointments: These generally last about one hour and are scheduled at our Rowland Heights shelter, typically between 10 AM and 3 PM. Depending on your location and availability, alternative meeting arrangements may sometimes be possible.
- Veterinary Appointments: Occasional visits may be required for vaccinations, medication, or other medical needs. These appointments are typically brief and arranged as needed.
Our foster coordinators will work with your schedule whenever possible.
How long will I need to foster an animal?
Foster commitments vary depending on the animal and your availability.
Some animals need temporary care for only two to three weeks, while others may benefit from longer-term fostering until they find their forever homes.
Whether you can foster for a few weeks or several months, your help can make a meaningful difference.
Can I foster if I already have pets?
Yes! Having pets of your own does not prevent you from becoming a foster parent.
Our team will work to match you with an animal that is compatible with your existing pets.
Animals receive health checks and appropriate preventative care before entering foster homes.
Safe, gradual introductions are important when welcoming a new animal into your household.
What if my foster animal is not a good match?
We understand that not every foster placement will be the perfect fit.
If you experience challenges, please contact your foster coordinator. Our team can provide guidance, evaluate the situation, and discuss possible adjustments.
Remember that animals need time to settle into new environments. Many rescuers use the Rule of 3s as a general guide:
- 3 Days: Time to decompress and begin feeling safe.
- 3 Weeks: Time to learn routines and become more comfortable.
- 3 Months: Time to build confidence and feel more settled.
Every animal adjusts at their own pace.
What if I have an upcoming vacation or travel plans?
We understand that foster parents have other commitments!
If you have upcoming travel plans, please communicate them with your foster coordinator as early as possible.
Depending on availability and the animal's needs, temporary arrangements at our shelter may be possible.
Can I foster if I live far from Rowland Heights?
Yes! VIDA Rescue works with foster families throughout Southern California, including some who live as far away as San Diego.
We especially welcome foster applicants from communities near Rowland Heights, including:
- Hacienda Heights and Walnut
- Diamond Bar and West Covina
- La Habra, Brea, and Fullerton
- Pomona, Claremont, and Chino Hills

Transportation assistance may sometimes be available, depending on the situation.
Can I adopt the animal I'm fostering?
Absolutely! VIDA Rescue offers foster-to-adopt opportunities.
If you're interested in potentially adopting your foster animal, please mention this in your foster application.
Approved foster parents generally do not need to complete a separate adoption application for their foster animal.
Standard adoption fees still apply.
